Our Science camp programs engage students with a variety of topics and hands-on learning activities. Each day is a new adventure filled with endless opportunities for discovery!

4-Day Science Camps
The Prophet Aquatic Research & Outreach Center (PAROC) and Emporia Recreation Center are excited to partner and provide a unique summer camp experience for young learners. Join us for a fun-filled week of hands-on learning experiences focusing on the natural world. Science topics are introduced in an active learning environment, with lessons that will include nature mysteries and investigations, water quality experiments, and many opportunities to learn about our native plants and animals up close. We will also incorporate cross-curricular lessons, including creative writing, art and math. Campers will spend quality time outside, having a great time observing nature using tools like binoculars, magnifying lenses and microscopes. We will have five sessions with varying ages.

Mini Science Camps
Discover, explore, and get hands-on with science at PAROC’s Mini Science Camps! These shorter, immersive camps are designed for curious minds who love the outdoors and want to dive deeper into specific science topics. Each camp features interactive lessons, field trips, and hands-on activities led by experts in the field. Campers must bring their water bottle each day.​ Snacks will be provided. Prairie Exploration Mini Camp - Ages 10-14
Monday, June 16th - Wednesday, June 18th
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
$50/camper
Join PAROC for a three-day adventure exploring the incredible prairies of Kansas! From June 16th–18th, 9 AM–12 PM, campers will get hands-on experience studying this rare and essential ecosystem through field trips, wildlife observations, and interactive activities. This hands-on camp is perfect for curious minds who love the outdoors! Snacks provided.
Campers will:

Explore the prairie — hike through tallgrass landscapes and discover the plants and animals that call it home.

Search for wildlife — flip rocks to find lizards and insects, observe birds and pollinators, and track signs of prairie life.

Study native plants — learn to identify wildflowers and grasses while understanding their role in the ecosystem.

Use real scientific tools — practice using compasses, binoculars, and field guides like a true ecologist.

Learn conservation techniques — understand the importance of prairies and how we can help protect them.
Aquatic Adventure Mini Camp - Ages 10-14

Join us for an exciting three-day aquatic exploration on June 16th-18th, 2 PM–5 PM, where campers ages 10–14 will dive into the world of aquatic ecology through hands-on science and fieldwork! This immersive, hands-on camp is perfect for young scientists eager to explore life beneath the surface! Snacks provided.
Campers will:

Step into the water—use seining nets to collect fish and aquatic invertebrates right from King Lake.

Identify species—learn how to recognize fish and macroinvertebrates using field guides and microscopes.

Try real scientific methods—use professional sampling equipment, including different nets and lab tools.

Meet the experts—learn from ESU professors and aquatic ecology professionals about careers in the field.

Explore water ecosystems—understand the role of aquatic life in healthy environments and how scientists' study and protect them.
